Celebrating World Environment Day 2025: Community and School-Based Actions for a Greener Future

On 5 June 2025, five vibrant events were organized across Morang and Jhapa districts in Nepal to mark World Environment Day, with the theme focused on promoting environmental consciousness and action at the grassroots level.

Under the LICED project, a significant event was organized at Shree Shiksha Sadan Secondary School, located in Kanepokhari Rural Municipality-3, Harakpur, Morang. The formal inauguration program was attended by distinguished guests, including Mr. Raghu Tudu, President of the School Management Committee; Mr. Gopal Bahadur Karki, Ward President of Kanepokhari RM-3 as Chief Guest; and Ms. Suman Rai, PMEDM, LCWS as Special Guest. Other attendees included local ward members and project staff.

A total of 110 participants (39 male and 71 female), mainly students from grades 6 to 10 and school staff, actively engaged in the event. The day featured an orientation on the importance of Global Environment Day and its 2025 theme, followed by practical activities such as the plantation of 15 trees, plastic collection and sanitation within school premises, and a quiz competition among student groups, concluding with a prize distribution ceremony.

Simultaneously, three other schools in Jhapa and Morang observed the day through environment-themed programs under the East-SD project. Events were conducted at Shree Panchakanya Basic School (Kamal RM-6, Jhapa), Shree Bhadrakali Secondary School (Gauradaha Municipality-6, Jhapa), and Shree Secondary School (Ratuwamai Municipality-5, Leti Govindapur, Morang).

These events focused on spreading awareness about environmental protection among school communities. A combined total of 121 participants (58 male and 63 female), including school management committee members, teachers, and students, participated enthusiastically. The highlight of the day was a massive tree plantation drive, where a total of 315 plants were planted across the three school premises—an impactful step towards greener school environments and climate action.

These events reflect the collective commitment of local communities, schools, and supporting organizations to environmental sustainability and youth engagement. Through education, plantation, and participatory activities, the celebrations of Global Environment Day 2025 have sown seeds of awareness and action for a better, greener tomorrow in the hearts of young students and community members alike.

The events were facilitated under two projects—LICED and East-SD—implemented by LCWS in partnership with LWF Nepal and NELC, and supported by donors ALWS, Australian Aid, and ELCA.
