Celebrating World Environment Day 2023: A Commitment to Plastic Control and Tree Plantation

On the occasion of World Environment Day 2023, a remarkable event took place at Shree Sagarmatha Basic School, supported financially and technically by Lutheran World Federation Nepal and its implementing partner, Lutheran Community Welfare Society. The program was jointly organized in collaboration with the school management committee.

The event witnessed the active participation of Mr. Ratna Bahadur Karki, the ward president of Kanepokhari 1, who presided as the chairperson. Representatives from the school, Lutheran Community Welfare Society, and a large number of students also enthusiastically took part. In total, 80 individuals, including 59 males and 21 females, came together for this event.

During his speech, Ratna Bahadur Karki highlighted the pressing issue of plastic’s excessive use and its detrimental impact on soil fertility. He expressed deep concern over reports of livestock deaths in their village due to plastic ingestion, which deeply saddens the hardworking farmers. In celebration of this achievement, a tree plantation program was organized to commemorate Environment Day. With the valuable assistance of Lutheran, 79 plants of various species were successfully planted in the school premises. This initiative served as a testament to the school’s commitment to environmental conservation and exemplified the positive impact that collective efforts can make towards building a greener future.

Narvada Magar, the principal of Sagarmatha Basic School, expressed pride in the significant progress made in reducing plastic usage within the school premises. Due to their efforts, it has become increasingly challenging to find any plastic waste on the school grounds. She said- ‘We are proud to share that we have made significant progress in reducing plastic usage within our school premises. In light of this achievement, we have organized a tree plantation program to commemorate Environment Day. With the valuable assistance of Lutheran, we have successfully planted 79 plants of various species in our school premises today. The students of the school actively participated in the event activities, demonstrating their understanding of the shared responsibility towards the planet. Nischal Basnet, a fifth-grade student, eloquently stated, “Our planet, Earth, is not only our home but also a shared responsibility. As stewards of this precious ecosystem, it is our duty to actively work towards its preservation and protection.” Mahima Baske, a fourth-grade student, added, “With the tree we planted today, we envision a future where its growth flourishes, providing shade and a peaceful sanctuary for us to read, play, and connect with nature.”

The event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of plastic control and the significance of nurturing a greener environment. It demonstrated the collective determination of the community to take action, inspiring hope for a sustainable future.
